WhenDid.io can be configured to use a custom "Personal Midnight" that defines when your day starts and ends. By default, your day starts and ends at standard midnight (12:00 AM). This feature is especially useful for night owls and shift workers who need their tracking to align with their actual daily schedule.
Personal Midnight is a Premium feature that allows you to customize when your day boundaries occur anywhere from 12 hours before to 12 hours after standard midnight.
How to Set Personal Midnight
To change your Personal Midnight setting:
- Click the Settings menu button.
- Select Options.

- Select App Behavior.

- In the Personal Midnight section, select your desired time offset from the dropdown menu. Options range from 12 hours before midnight (-12) to 12 hours after midnight (+12). The changes will be applied instantly.

The dropdown will show a description of when your day will start and end based on your selection, such as "Day starts at 4:00 AM, ends at 4:00 AM the next day."
What Personal Midnight Affects
When you set a Personal Midnight, it affects several aspects of WhenDid.io:
- Time displays: "Today" calculations respect your personal day boundaries
- History grouping: Action button history is grouped by your personal days, not calendar days
- Post-click actions: Duration calculations like "until next personal midnight" use your custom boundary
- Numeric tracking: Counters for "Today", "This Week", etc. respect your personal midnight setting
- Time period calculations: All time-based features align with your actual daily schedule
For example, if you set your Personal Midnight to 4 AM, then your "day" runs from 4 AM to 4 AM instead of midnight to midnight. This means if you click a button at 2 AM, it will be counted as part of the previous day's activity rather than the new day.
Premium Feature Notice
Personal Midnight is a Premium feature. If you don't have Premium access, you'll see an upgrade prompt in the Personal Midnight section with information about how this feature can benefit night shift workers and others who need custom day boundaries.
Common Use Cases
Personal Midnight is particularly helpful for:
- Night shift workers who work overnight and want their tracking to align with their work schedule
- Night owls who regularly stay up past midnight and want their late-night activities grouped with the same "day"
- Caregivers who track activities across non-standard daily schedules
- Anyone whose daily routine doesn't align with traditional calendar days
